Two Engineering Interns Share What They’re Learning at Pall

Every career journey starts somewhere. For many early-career professionals, an internship is where classroom learning becomes real-world experience, where new skills are tested, and where curiosity turns into confidence. At Pall, interns contribute to meaningful projects across our sites and business units while learning from teams focused on solving complex customer and operational challenges.
This National Intern Day in the U.S. this month, we connected with two engineering interns based in Cortland, New York to learn more about the projects they are supporting, the skills they are building and what has stood out most from their time at Pall.
What types of projects do you work on?
I’m working on projects that improve production line productivity and support sustainability. Much of my work focuses on finding ways to optimize manufacturing processes so operations can run more efficiently over time.
What does a typical day as an intern look like?
No two days are exactly the same, which keeps the experience interesting. Depending on the project, I may be troubleshooting machinery, reverse engineering components for spare parts, learning how new equipment operates or supporting implementation work on the production floor.
What do you enjoy most about your internship?
I enjoy the variety and the chance to learn across different areas of engineering and manufacturing. I’ve been able to work hands-on with equipment, support process improvement efforts and contribute to meaningful projects while learning from experienced teammates.
How has this internship connected to your academic or career goals?
It has strengthened my technical and problem-solving skills while giving me a clearer view of manufacturing operations. It has also reinforced my interest in a career centered on process improvement, operations and innovation.
What’s the most valuable thing you have learned at Pall?
I’ve learned how important it is to ask questions, troubleshoot thoughtfully and understand how each part of a system connects. The experience has shown me that continuous learning is a big part of engineering.
What types of projects do you work on?
I’m working with two other interns to automate a welding procedure using a FANUC robot. That includes programming, designing tooling, developing CAD models and creating detailed manufacturing drawings for fabrication.
I also design and test fixtures for an electropolishing process, using CAD modeling, 3D printing and hands-on testing to refine the approach. The goal is to reduce machining time, lower fixture costs and extend the life of the mounts.
What has been the most rewarding part of your internship?
One of the most rewarding experiences was participating in a Total Productive Manufacturing Bootcamp for one of our MicroE departments. I worked alongside engineers, maintenance staff and business personnel to help reduce argon waste in MBraun LABmaster Pro glove boxes.
The event gave me a better understanding of how sustainable improvements are put into practice in a manufacturing environment and how cross-functional collaboration can lead to meaningful results.
What drew you to Pall?
During my tour of the Cortland site, I was struck by how welcoming and approachable everyone was. Employees took time to introduce themselves, explain their roles and help me understand the work being done at the site.
Those interactions made it easy to feel engaged from the start. The environment felt positive, motivating and focused on helping others learn.
What do you enjoy most about your internship?
I enjoy feeling like a true part of the team. I’m given meaningful responsibilities and projects that contribute to the site, which makes the work engaging and rewarding.
It’s also valuable to see my work applied in a practical setting, whether I’m designing fixtures, developing CAD models or supporting process improvements. The collaborative environment has helped me learn from experienced engineers and teammates who are willing to share their knowledge.
What surprised you most about working at Pall?
The biggest surprise has been the level of teamwork across the site. Engineers, operators and maintenance teams share knowledge and insight, which helps improve outcomes and reflects a strong culture of support.
What’s the most valuable thing you have learned at Pall?
One of the most valuable lessons has been the importance of asking questions and staying open to learning. Early on, I was introduced to a lot of new information, and asking questions helped me build confidence and understanding.
Learning from experienced employees has made a real difference. People are willing to share what they know, which has helped me better understand both the work and the processes behind it.
For Matthew and Logan, the internship experience at Pall has created opportunities to apply technical knowledge, contribute to continuous improvement and learn from teams with deep manufacturing expertise. Their projects may differ, but both experiences point to the same value of an internship: building confidence through hands-on work, collaboration and continuous learning.
